Overview & Reviews
A high-performance turbo model debuts this year. A small spoiler over the rear window is the only exterior telltale that the Bug next to you has the 150-horsepower 1.8-liter turbocharged inline four from the larger Passat sedan under the hood.

The Bug that just kept Going... - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By javbw - November 20 - 11:33 pmI have a 1999 (2/24/99) GLS bug with 200,000 miles on it, and I drive the heck out of it. I drive it fast, hard, and occaisionally offroad. (get the sport springs). Im very hard on the things I own, and the fact my Bug is still with me is a testament to its inital design and early warranty recalls (window switches and a couple sensors back around year 2) - all the "bells and whisles" worriers can forget about it for their next car - and get auto door locks and windows already! All of my issues have stemmed from things thrown at my car on the freeway (rocks, ladders, etc) and as long as you keep up with the maintaince, shocks, and a failed engine sensor every year, youre good.

ode to a new beetle - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By lansing - October 7 - 2:00 amWhile it was love at first sight, the affair turned out to fade with higher maintenance costs than my second wife. The Dick Dean has a shabby, little practice of adding 10% more to the overall price as a market adjustment", which since cured me of ever buying a VW from them again. Their only saving grace is their service department, which treats customers as if they matter. The only problem with the service department, is I see too much of them. After 32,000 miles, every thing on the car started falling apart, or needed replacing at $92/hour. Now that the romance has faded, I will never fall in love again with anything on the lot at Dick Dean VW.

Never Again - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By JJ - September 23 - 6:33 amThis my LAST VW. I have electrical problems galore. Now the headliner is coming off and some of the leather on the drivers door is coming unglued. What terrible quality for a German car, and VW wont stand behind their own work after a measly three years. I am going back to the Japanese cars. They know how to make quality and stand behind their products.

Not What They Used To Be - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By Rebecca - May 7 - 10:10 pmThis is my 4th Beetle and my favorite thing about the new Beetle is that the heater works. Heres a list of things that no longer work in the car; drivers side window no longer goes up and down, tape player stopped working, antenna fell off, passenger side window motor had to be replaced (as well as drivers side, but still doesnt work because the button broke off), side view mirror button broke off, trunk doesnt latch, hood latch occasionally doesnt work, locking gas door no longer locks, A/C no longer operating. This is unbelievable considering I am the only driver of this vehicle and am no kid. Also, most importantly its oil consumption worrisome at best.

My Yellow TDi Bug - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By Manu/nothias - May 2 - 10:00 amLots of head turning, and a fast bug with 49 mpg. Could not have asked more. Have some interior youth defaults, fixed on the newer models. 83000 miles and still going like new. Love passing on the left lane, and seing the SUV stopping for gas. Love that Bug even if I did not really want one, was the only TDi on the lot.

Fun. downside: window/lock switches. - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By jjd - April 25 - 10:00 amThe only crticism of this fun-to-drive car is the window and lock switches were of poor quality. The difficulty in changing headlamps is a myth (even the owners manual tells owners to take it to the dealership--I got a $53 estimate to change it). I found a procedure on the inernet and changed the passenger side headlamp quickly and for $7--the cost of the bulb.

Save Yourself - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By Thomas Davis - March 8 - 2:00 amThe reliablity of this model is far below expectations, requiring over $5,000 of repairs in the past 4 years especially exhaust windows and amenities and gear shift/gear train. Stay away from this lemon!

Love-Bug - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By JerseyShore524 - January 14 - 8:53 pmLove my car! I can fit 3 adults (me included) and a car seat quite comfortably. It hugs turns and is quick as a bunny. German cars are really made better!!

Good stuff - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By Robert94114 - January 13 - 10:00 amI have not had any problems with this car. The only pet peves I have is the cup holders and the reverse takes so long to shift the gear on the automatic.

I love this car - 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle
By sammyjack - November 17 - 2:00 amThis is the best car I have ever driven for the money. Mine even has heated leather seats, which are so nice. I even bought the car used, and it is in great condition.
